The Newark LGBTQ Center Celebrates Black History Month – Living in the Life: Celebrating LGBTQ Heroes for Black History Month. A Virtual Screening and Talk with Stories of African American Pioneers

In the Life was at the forefront of LGBTQ media in the Americas for two decades from 1992 to 2012. The acclaimed public television series was the country’s first and longest-running national newsmagazine devoted to LGBTQ issues.

Joining a panel for a post-screening Q&A will be In the Life producers Charles Ignacio and John Catania; In the Life Director of Membership and Communications, David Martin; In the Life correspondent, Darius de Haas; and Director of the Newark LGBTQ Center, Beatrice Simpkins.

Cooking Matters for Kids (CMK) is a free nutrition education program for (SNAP) recipients and applicants. It is 6 courses on healthy eating skills and building confidence in food shopping
on a budget. It is a series of classes geared for children, focusing on food safety and food preparation education.

Join Alisha Lola Jones, Ph.D., author of Flaming? The Peculiar Theopolitics of Fire and Desire in the Black Male Gospel Performance, in a panel discussion about gender roles, popular culture and sacred music of the Black Church. The Indiana University professor will be joined by Rev. A. Craig Dunn, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Madison, NJ and Rev. Elder Kevin E. Taylor, Senior Pastor of Unity Fellowship Church in Newark. The talk will examine the impact and significance of church leadership, music, membership and how the LGBTQIA Movement has shaped the Black Church.

Join presenters Leigh LeBlanc, Director, High School Admissions, Berkeley College, and Roy Harte, Admissions Advisor/Recruiter, Essex County Community College, for two workshops. These workshops are perfect for attendees who have their HSE (High School Equivalency) Diploma or are preparing to take their HSE test (GED, TASC, HiSET).

February 24th, Mr. Harte will discuss:

  • Can I go to college with a HSE diploma?
  • What do I need to know to start the college process with a HSE diploma?
  • Which HSE test will get me into college?
  • How do I apply and complete a financial aid form for college?
  • What Resources are available to me in choosing a college?

March 3rd, Ms. LeBlanc will discuss:

  • How to research eligible scholarships and grants
  • Affording college
  • Benefits of 2 and 4 year college
  • Do I need to take the SAT for college?
  • Can I go to college with a learning disability and a HSE diploma?

Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables (JSY) is a free nutrition education program for (SNAP) recipients and applicants. The JSY program offers a series of thirteen workshops that provide practical nutrition information in a way that is fun and easy to understand. Each workshop has a nutrition talk and a recipe discussion.
