Summer Reading Challenge / El Desafío de Lectura de Verano

The Summer Reading Challenge is a recreational summer literacy program for children ages 3 to 18. Participants are encouraged to read 20 minutes per day during the Challenge. Incentives are provided for every 100 minutes of reading, up to a maximum of 1,000 minutes. The Library will keep a reading log for each child. The 2018 Summer Reading Challenge has separate contests for kids and teens. The teen challenge is for teens entering grades 7 and up.

El Desafío de Lectura de Verano es un programa de lectura recreativa para niños de 3 a 18 años. Estimula a los participantes a leer 20 minutos al día durante el verano. Los lectores reciben premios por cada 100 minutos de lectura, hasta alcanzar un máximo de 1,000 minutos. La biblioteca mantendrá una lista de libros leídos por cada niño. El Desafío de Lectura de Verano tiene concursos separados para niños y adolescentes. El Desafío de Lectura para Adolescentes es para los jóvenes de 7o grado en adelante.


Guidelines for the Challenge

  1. The Summer Reading Challenge will run from June 11 to August 4, 2018.
  2. Participants are encouraged to read 20 minutes per day.
  3. Children are encouraged to check out books to read and report on according to their grade and/or reading level.
  4. Parents, caregivers, and teachers may read to children. The children should then report to the librarian.
  5. Each child may report on a maximum of four hours (total of twelve twenty-minute blocks) per week.
  6. Reports can either be oral or written. Written reports may be a picture, poem, report, or craft.
  7. Titles reported on will be entered in the child’s reading log.
  8. Every child who reads and reports on at least one 20–minute block of reading will receive a Summer Reading Challenge certificate.
  9. There will be a scale of incentives.
  10. A maximum of one thousand (1000) minutes per child will be accepted.

  1. El Desafío de Lectura de Verano se llevará a cabo desde el 11 de junio hasta el 4 de agosto de 2018.
  2. Se anima a los participantes a leer 20 minutos al día.
  3. Se alienta a los niños a tomar prestados libros para leer en casa y luego reportar lo que han leído, de acuerdo a su grado escolar y/o nivel de lectura.
  4. Los padres, encargados y maestros pueden leerle a los niños. Los niños entonces presentan su reporte a la bibliotecaria.
  5. Cada niño puede reportar un máximo de cuatro horas de lectura a la semana (un total de doce periodos de veinte minutos).
  6. El reporte puede ser un resumen escrito u oral, o se puede presentar en forma de un dibujo, poema o manualidades.
  7. Cada libro que se reporte será registrado en la lista de lectura del niño.
  8. Cada niño que reporte por lo menos un periodo de 20 minutos de lectura recibirá un certificado de participación en el Desafío de Lectura de Verano.
  9. Habrá una escala de incentivos/premios de acuerdo al número de minutos que el niño lea.
  10. Se aceptará un máximo de mil (1000) minutos de lectura por niño.
