SYNAGOGUES OF NEWARK:
WHERE WE GATHERED AND PRAYED, STUDIED AND CELEBRATED

Thursday, December 6th, 6 PM
Newark Public Library | 5 Washington Street, Newark, NJ 07102 | First Floor Meeting Room
Come and explore 170 years of Newark’s Jewish history!
The city’s first synagogue, B’nai Jeshurun, started in 1848. In the early 20th century, Newark had the 8th largest Jewish community in the United States, with 40 active synagogues. Even today, Newark has one remaining active synagogue, Ahavas Sholom, with a congregation dating back to 1905.
Join us for a program that will include a Chanukah menorah lighting ceremony, a slide presentation, personal synagogue stories, Hebrew folk melodies, a shofar demonstration, and the viewing of The Synagogues of Newark exhibit, now in the first and fourth floor galleries of The Newark Public Library.
Light refreshments served.
Sponsored by The Jewish Museum of New Jersey and historic Congregation Ahavas Sholom.
