Black History Month Event at Rutgers SPAA – “The Birth of a Movement” Documentary Showing and Panel Discussion

Monday, February 25th | 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Rutgers University-Newark | Bergen Room, Paul Robeson Campus Center, 350 MLK Blvd., Newark, NJ 07102

In honor of Black History Month, Rutgers School of Public Affairs and Administration (SPAA) will be showing a documentary entitled “The Birth of a Movement.” This film provides excerpts from D.W. Griffith’s KKK-friendly “The Birth of a Nation” that opened in 1915 to big audiences all over the country and was even shown by President Wilson in the White House. But, the film also generated widespread protests by African Americans, led by Harvard-educated newspaper editor W.M. Trotter. The documentary, which also features in depth analysis by Black and White historians and others, will be followed by a panel discussion and questions from the audience.
