A Statement from our Director on the Current Events – Newark Public Library

A Statement from our Director on the Current Events

To Our Newark Public Library Community,

Recent events surrounding the murder of George Floyd have spawned outrage, anger, and disbelief across the nation. Here in Newark, many of us have joined peaceful protests to express our intolerance for structural racism and to demand change.

The Newark Public Library has always been a safe haven for anyone seeking knowledge, support, or assistance. It was built on a foundation of equity and opportunity – and this is never more true than today. We are an integral part of the diverse Newark community, and stand with our Black friends and neighbors against the injustice and violence they face daily.

While we struggle to find words, we point to our friends and partners at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice who eloquently and powerfully explain what needs to be done in the attached statement. They are the leading organization in New Jersey devoted to advancing social justice and we urge you to visit their website, www.njisj.org to learn about ways you can take action.

Black Lives Matter!

With compassion,

Tom Alrutz
Interim Library Director
