At Newark Public Library we stand with all Asian, Asian-American and Pacific Islanders during this period of continuing pain and mourning for those victims murdered last week in Atlanta. In 2020, there was a 150 percent increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans, all leading to the senseless, abhorrent acts that have recently occurred. It is news we have unfortunately heard before, in the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and the many thousands of innocents who have lost their lives in this country because they were perceived as a threat — because of whom they were.
The library profession works tirelessly to counteract misinformation and false narratives and we align with the American Library Association and New Jersey Library Association against hate and discrimination in any form. We welcome everyone to the Library, and the Newark Public Library is open and ready in person and online to do what libraries do best: provide access to credible resources in support of knowledge and understanding of others and the world around us.
