Brazil in Newark 2017 – Film Screening: Guerra de Canudos (Battle of Canudos) @ Main Library, 2nd Floor Reading Room
Sep 22 @ 6:00 pm – 9:30 pm

Brazil in Newark 2017 Film Series

Guerra de Canudos (Battle of Canudos)

This epic film from 1997 tells the true story of how the Brazilian army crushed a peasant rebellion in 1897 in the arid heartland of Bahia in northeastern Brazil. More than 15,000 people died in the bloodiest civil war ever fought in Brazil. Directed by Sergio Rezende, and starring José Wilker, Cláudia Abreu, and Paulo Betti, Guerra de Canudos vividly illustrates how one community rebelled against a government that brought oppression and poverty.

Following the screening, enjoy a pocket show with questions and answers from artists and producers. Screening: 170 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles. Pocket Show: 30 min.

This film series is part of a celebration of Brazil in Newark, with an exhibit and children’s cultural workshop series also offered at the Newark Public Library. Additional films will be screened on Friday nights in September

Organized by Silvana Magda and Brazusa Cultural Center in association with the City of Newark, Mayor Ras J. Baraka, and the Newark Public Library
